A 12-year-old hospital website rebuilt on a platform the team could finally control

BUILT moved Charter Oak Hospital from an aging Drupal 7 multisite into WordPress, creating a reusable ACF publishing system that gave the team more control over content, design, technical improvements, and organic search.

The problem

An aging CMS was limiting what the team could improve

Charter Oak’s website was still running on a 12-year-old Drupal 7 build that had become difficult to maintain. Publishing was unreliable, code access was extremely limited, and meaningful design or technical improvements were hard to make.

Because the site also lived inside a shared hospital multisite, content from other facilities could occasionally appear on Charter Oak’s site. The same constraints also limited what we could do to improve its SEO.

A standalone WordPress foundation built for control and continued improvement

Move the hospital onto its own maintainable foundation

The previous Drupal implementation was part of a shared environment that Charter Oak could not fully control. Rebuilding the site in WordPress created a clearer technical foundation where hospital content, code, and future improvements could be managed intentionally.

The old platform severely limited what could be changed at the technical and structural level. The WordPress rebuild gave BUILT greater control over page architecture, metadata, internal linking, content organization, templates, and other parts of the site that support organic search.

Organic search performance improved significantly after the rebuild, and the Charter Oak project became a model for similar website modernization work elsewhere in the hospital network.

The main problem was not simply that the website looked old. The Drupal implementation limited publishing, development access, technical improvements, and the ability to evolve the platform.
